However, it also perpetuates the myth that Ian Fleming’s novel features a young, untested Bond who comes of age during the novel, when in fact the coming-of-age story exists only in the film. Yes, Bond is younger in the CASINO ROYALE novel, but that’s only because it’s the first book; the book’s character is at least in his 30s, and there is little if any suggestion that he lacks experience. As Banville writes in his excellent introduction, which explores the genesis of the novels, Fleming based his hero on a number of people he had known during the war. Bond is absorbing and elusive; at once charming and, at times, shockingly ruthless. He is often cold, but ‘easily tipped over into sentiment’; a subtly evoked vulnerability and capacity for self-doubt temper the impression of a man who is unshakeable and undefeatable. For all his extraordinary, single-minded precision when dealing with his enemies, his attitude is more equivocal than one might expect. Sometimes, he observes, ‘the villains and heroes get all mixed up’. For the first time, on screen, we would see how James Bond earned his 00 status, and his first assignment as such. The film follows the original novel fairly closely, though updated for the era. And it expanded to include some dazzling set pieces, locations and stunt-filled action . The story would see Bond find himself in a high-stakes round of Texas Hold ‘Em poker . He uses the game to capture Le Chiffre, who serves as the private banker to a group of terrorists. A group that will be very familiar to Bond fans, Le Chiffre may owe the group some money after some reversals of fortune. But when I found out what had been done to you, even though it was Le Chiffre who did it and he turned out to be a traitor, I decided I couldn’t go on. By that time I had begun to fall in love with you. They wanted me to find out things from you while you were recovering, but I refused. I had to ring up an Invalides number twice a day. They threatened me, and finally they withdrew my control and I knew my lover in Poland would have to die. But they were afraid I would talk, I suppose, and I got a final warning that SMERSH would come for me if I didn’t obey them. Then I saw the man with the black patch in the Splendide and I found he had been making inquiries about my movements. The heavies inNo Time to Die—Christoph Waltz, Rami Malek, and Dali Benssalah (Primo, a.k.a. Cyclops)—wear their scars, burns, and empty eye sockets as if they were marked by the beast. Surely if Anne Hathaway needs to apologize for her portrayal of an evil witch with claw-like hands inThe Witches, then Malek and Waltz also have some explaining to do.

Knowing Bond to be a talented bluffer, MI6 sends him in to beat Le Chiffre, hoping that the crook will be forced to take refuge under the organization’s auspices when the creditors come calling. Worse, we have a terrific couple of scenes with the legendary Monica Bellucci, only to have her vanish from the movie entirely. I suppose the fact she doesn’t die is some kind of structural improvement given the fate of many of the female characters Bond woos in these movies. Mendes’ and the screenwriters’ knowledge of the Bond mythos makes for lots of fun through the running time, with plenty of nods to movies past. Oh, and there’s a personalized gun, just like Bond received back in Licence To Kill. Most of this is fine, this tilling of the soil. Some of it goes a bit too far, but director Sam Mendes brings authenticity to all of it, to both the action sequences and the character work, making for an extraordinary entry in the Bond franchise. It won’t toppleCasino Royaleas the best of the Craig era, but it’s tons of fun. He and Bond share one of the best written scenes in the movie, crystallizing both their personal friendship and their nations’ sometimes competing interests. Part of the success of the previous bond movies is ticket sales from the opposite sex….this guy just won’t sell tickets.

When you work in same small team, you start to develop a shared philosophy of how to approach a technical challenge and how best to skin a cat! Working on Skyfall we spent a lot of time in DOPS and playing with fluids but we never really know what the next challenge will be. We have successfully used it for VFX, creature and crowd jobs but also like using it for more creative look-development projects such as Skyfall. Framestore traditionally works on a lot of creature jobs and some of those have been done using Houdini/Mantra in the past. We have also done a lot of fur and feather work with Houdini and Mantra. Houdini’s digital assets mean that we have to put less time into proprietary asset management, as they offer a starting point straight out the box. When it came time to adapt Goldfinger to film, the Aston Martin was kept but the model was changed. The producers convinced Aston Martin to allow them to use the prototype of their latest model, the DB5, as Bond’s new car. The DB5 would have all the capabilities of the novel’s Mark III and many additional useful ones as well, including a revolving license plate, an ejector seat, and an oil slick on demand. From a car originally only equipped with a smokescreen in the first Goldfinger film script, it became the first “hero car” on film, equipped with many ingenious features for almost any dangerous situation. The DB5 has been featured in more Bond films than any other car, from Thunderball to Goldeneye to Spectre, and you can see it in the upcoming No Time to Die. Beyond that, though, there needs to be a touch of mystery to Bond. That’s the quality that “Casino Royale” brought back to the series through its fantastically tricky dramatization of the relationship between Craig’s fast, steely, roughneck Bond and Eva Green’s insinuating Vesper Lynd. And “No Time to Die,” though it’s not the work of art “Casino Royale” was, possesses just enough of that quality. Ideally, there’s a romance to a James Bond movie — I don’t just mean a love story, but a romance to Bond’s presence, a grander motive behind the ruthless execution of his every move. Casino Royale , Ian Fleming’s first novel, introduced James Bond and other recurring characters of the Bond series of novels and short stories.
